Difference between 450 SX-F and 500 EXC?

Recommended Posts

Hi all,

I'm looking at getting a new bike, and was wondering what are the main differences between the 2017-2018 450 SX-F and the 500 EXC, and please, don't say the difference is 50 :D

From what can see the key differences are:

  • Lights.
  • Alternator.
  • Linkage vs PDS.
  • Ignition / CDI (I think?)
  • Gearing (I think?)

Any other huge difference?

The SX-F seems to be a lot cheaper for a similar age bike, as they a reasonable option for enduro, or should they be left for the track?

Thanks for your help.

Inertia .... I hated my 500 but loved the several 450’s (exc’s though) that I owned.

Mickey keep in mind your new gen 19 Fe450 is 6kgs lighter then the older 2016 Fe501 you owned-you will feel a massive difference in handle from that weight reduction + the new generation is a lot smoother-great bike mate I’m glad your enjoying the bike, hopefully get you back up to Goughs Bay soon.

But you looked so good on the 500 mate! :)

Are you still on a 450 now mate?

I've still got my 2014 EXC 250 which I love and will take to my grave. I've just sold my 690 however and I'm looking to build up a super lightweight dual sport that can handle some multi-day trips, but will also be fun for high country riding. You think the 450 would fit the bill?

I’ve gone back to a 350.

I had lots of fun on the 450 and, for me, would enjoy it more.

Can most likely get you a good ride on husky 501 if you’re keen.

Once the 690 is picked up the 501 could definitely be an option, glad I've been paid the deposit at least, it is not a good environment for selling bikes at the moment. I'll let you know!

Sporto I have had both.

Absolutley loved my 500 and absolutely love my FX450. Similar but not.

500 lots of bottom and not a great deal of over rev where as 450 has both.

When I update I will be replacing it with another 450 FX because they are light, fast, good suspension which can be adapted to trail riding with the air forks.

Yes they absolutely suck balls for tight single snotty stuff but anything else they are an absolute dream. Get on a 450 mxer and I promise you will not regret it.

Linkage a big positive in my option but personal preference. FYI those who prefer pds don’t know what they’re missing out on do they @Scottland

Huh? What do you enjoy more? The 350 or the 450 mate? And I supposed the other question, which one is more sensible?

350 much more sensible and I appear to be a little faster on it .... but if you haven’t owned at least one 450 you’re missing out, just like if you haven’t tried a 250 2T you’re missing out!
