Sweet as GPS with offline maps free.!

Recommended Posts

So I decided to get a brand new rugged (IP68) android phone. Blackview is the brand. Cost me about $180 delivered. No need for Sim ..use wifi to phone hotspot if required but not need as all maps are offline using LocusMaps.

Was using a ram mount but just changed to quadlock..let's see how that goes.!

The ram mount worked quite well but was a bit bulky for my liking.

That looks good. I usually track my rides with Runkeeper as it is easy enough for me to work out.

Can you explain what I need to download to use Locusmaps with my phone and get those maps. They look good.

Google Play > locus maps.

Easy

There is a pro version which has no ads...well worth it.

There is no iPhone equivalent or anything like it. If you have an iPhone...buy a cheap android to use just for maps. I don't know how carmine and Tom Tom are still in business when you come late costs and features.

Do you need a special license to drive all that kit? Arksing for a friend.

Haha . So the story goes like this..

- the spot tracker..set n forget.
- the BMW GPS... useless (Garmin crappy unit) ..just got it because is reads info from the bike ..speed, temps etc. $1100 ... robbery! Never again
- the unit top let is my main phone ... Before I got back into dirt bikes...I would use locus maps on that. Galaxy note 8.
- got the blackview BV8000s because it is rugged and cheap and Android..locus maps.

If I had my time over .I wouldn't have got the framing GPS with the bike..and the blackview Android phone would be where the Garmin is.

Easy

Hi Pepperjack.

How is your BV6000 going now after a year of use? I'm looking at getting a new phone and something this sturdy seams like a good option. Do you use this as a phone or just for GPS? I've had a look on ebay for them and the 16gb go for around $230 and 32gb go for $300 now. My current phone is a Sam gal S4 mini thats out of date a while now. It doesn't like to connect to Dirtriderz site or let me write a post, so will upgrade phone real soon.

With the locus maps as a GPS, does it have the ability to show you directions from previous tracked maps(like Google maps from point A to B etc) so you can follow your previous route, with upcoming turns shown on the screen, in the off road/trail tight tracks sense?

I currently have/use ViewRanger app (free version) to track where I've been, only to make it back to the cars if i'm lost(happened once, made it back but a pain to get phone out of pocket to check). Have not used it to try and follow a previous track and not sure how to if it does do it.

BTW I came across this looking at "locus maps" and thought it might interest you.

I use mine as a phone. Works great and I haven't broken it yet (I have a habit of breaking them).

The WiFi is good and use it for my PC to get access to the internet from it.

Screens good for surfing the net, email etc.

For around town and getting to ride spots I prefer navmii as it's simple and gives good voice directions like a regular car GPS. Its free too and works great offline so I run both it and locus.
