saw this thread and its something i have been meaning to post for a while!!

currently restoring 2 old roadbikes, a 1954 DKW RT250/2 & a 1955 DKW RT250/2, one being my dad's (the 1955) and the other mine.

if you haven't heard of DKW's before, have a look, they did a fair bit...especially with 2 strokes

It's been very slow progress, and hopefully will have the 1955 getting assembled soon (dad has more cash than i do, so he goes first). Have mocked everything up to see what we have/don't have then pulled everything apart.

pulled the motor apart which had supposedly been "rebuilt" before, but i think the rebuild went as far as a can of paint...

have had the fork legs repaired and re-chromed, looked like they had spent some time on the bottom of the ocean!!

currently the crank cases are away being water blasted. we had soda blasted them here, but decided that water blasting would be better for what we are planning to do.

pics of what has happened so far:

Since i couldnt get the husaberg running to go riding today (cranks, but no power to anything else, but thats for another time...) i finally got some work done on this project. Its not much, but its a start!!

Have had a few things waterblasted, and they have come up a treat!!

Got the bearings in one side crankcase, and assembled the gearbox, shift mechanism & crank. Cant go any further with it as i have left a few bits at work and need to still get a few things....

Will hopefully get the engine complete and running soon, then i can get the frame and tinwork started.45d4dc85f2599c6c29e85b276562b46a.jpg&key=9fd0852b3ec31b84e1d85feb5d959a2544a68159bf514fd93b36b677d188a288deae4d517ab9cb49b9239e921ef566cc.jpg&key=87423ca4b048e59670cd628df6bde3a602b8840481d288ab26529a1e2a286b8570dbdafd472239bb09720c9faec7d4f7.jpg&key=c06df91b892cfbda631e57a543b7f92fbd9adb0b400db71e2cfb7798df21ccb69dda03c0b51fd5d87368a02c07054b90.jpg&key=3b670198c05776ca686b853f22c1dd4b625f320a29a5b95310dca3d17d44709017423e1d69f5c9ad32386f83bc16fc3a.jpg&key=551bd041dd248ab976c0c7c28c179e1ee5357ede1b886f3e3214ee2092617332

Bit more tonight, got a couple more parts from work and put the crankcases together. Unfortunately i have to find a few more parts but hopefully can get the top end and a few other bits on sooner rather than later...37966680f09714cf36d2c701f0566b9a.jpg8aa461c2456703fe10a70352dc953afc.jpg

Quick question for people, about to start doing the frame, should i paint or powdercoat the frame?
It was originally painted, but not sure as there are arguements for doing both....

Depends on the use. Pure showbike that will not be ridden, Powdercoat.

Riding bike paint is best.

Reasoning being that powdercoat while it does look good when it does chip it is near impossible to patch and more will flake off, Regular paint you can just touch up with a brush.

I was thinking that but dont know all that much about powdercoating and while the bike will be kept clean and original, it will be ridden...
Going to attempt to spray myself, thinking worst case can strip it back and get a proffesional to do it if i crack the sads and cant get it good enough!!
